Messages on Christ
Behold the Lamb of God
by Pastor John Khng
Scripture Reading: John 1:29
“The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”
I. “Behold” – John 1:29 - Look, See, Observe, Calling us to pay attention to who Christ is.
II. “The Lamb of God” – John 1:29 - Christ is called the Lamb of God – This title points to Him as the Passover Lamb – Exo. 12:1-29; John 1:29, 36; 19:28-37; 1 Cor 5:7
There are FOUR Significant Similarities between the lamb sacrificed for each family in Exodus and the Lamb of God to be sacrificed at Calvary Cross
The Passover Lamb must be Slain According to God’s Timing
– Exo 12:6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it
in the evening.
– John 19:14 – “And it was the preparation of the Passover (feast), and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!
Christ was crucified during the observation of the Jewish Passover Feast
– Reason why Paul said, 1 Cor 5:7, “For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:”
The Passover Lamb’s Bones must Not Be Broken
– Exo 12:46, “In one house shall it be eaten; thou shalt not carry forth ought of the flesh abroad out of the house; neither shall ye break a bone
thereof.” See also Num. 9:12 – strict requirement when observing the Annual Passover – the bones of the sacrificial lamb must not be
broken.
– John 19:36, “For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.”
Here we see God’s divine stamp of approval – the fulfilment of prophecy.
– Question: Why did one of the soldiers took a spear and pierced the side of Jesus in John 19:34?
Answer: to fulfil another of the many prophecies concerning the details of Christ’s death – John 19:37, see Zech. 12:10
The fulfilment of two prophecies one after another confirmed Christ as the promised Messiah. Two is a number that signifies confirmation –
John the Baptist announced twice – “Behold the Lamb of God” – John 1:29, 36. Judas Iscariot said of Christ as being innocent. Pilate said of
Christ that he found no fault in him and that He was a just man – Mat 27:4; John 19:3. Indeed Christ is the Promised Sinless Lamb of God
who came to take away the sin of the world.
The Passover Lamb’s Blood must be Applied
Exo 12:7 And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.
Exo 12:13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.
Our sins are cleansed away by the blood of Christ – 1 John 1:7
We are redeemed by the precious blood of Christ – 1 Pet. 1:18,19.
We are able to come near to God by the blood of Christ – Eph. 2:13
There are many hymns that mentioned the blood of Christ but sadly many churches have stopped singing about the blood of Christ. They have also stopped preaching about the blood of Christ.
Just like the Israelites applied the blood of the sacrificial lamb onto the upper door post and the two side posts, we should apply the blood of the Lamb of God to our heart by faith.
Hymn:
Would you be free from the burden of sin?
There’s pow’r in the blood, pow’r in the blood.
Would you o’er evil a victory win?
There is wonderful pow’r in the blood.
Chorus:
There is pow’r pow’r wonder working pow’r
In the blood of the Lamb.
There is pow’r pow’r wonder working pow’r
In the precious blood of the Lamb
III. “Who taketh away the sin of the world” - John 1:29
A) In the Old Testament – one lamb for one house – Exo. 12:3, to save one person, the first born of each Jewish family.
B) In the New Testament – One Lamb for the whole world – to save anyone from both the Jewish and Gentile families – “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” – Rom 10:13 Any one of us can escape the death sentence by trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ for our salvation today.
Conclusion: The Chinese character for "righteousness" is most interesting. It is composed of two separate characters one character is the word for lamb, the other for me. When the "lamb" is placed directly above "me," a new character "righteousness" is formed. This is a very helpful picture of the grace of God - "I under the lamb am righteous!”
Invitation: Do you have the Lord Jesus Christ in your heart? If you have received the Lord Jesus Christ into your heart, you have already been made righteous in Him. If you have not received Him, how about consider accepting Christ, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Will you accept Him as your personal Saviour by repenting of your sins and receiving the Lord Jesus Christ into your heart today?

- The Passover Event took place in the book of Exodus but its significant is still very relevant for us today.
- The people of Israel were under bondage as slaves in Egypt at that time.
- For 400 years (Gen. 15:13; Acts 7:6) the Israelites suffered under their Egyptian taskmasters.
- They were made to build treasure cities for Pharaoh (Exo. 1:11).
- Pharaoh ordered that every male Jewish baby was to be cast into river Nile to be killed - “Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.” – Exo 1:22
- Due to the great sufferings under their harsh Egyptian task masters, they cried out to God for deliverance and God sent Moses to be their deliverer.
- God through Moses sent plague after plague on Pharaoh and his people but Pharaoh hardened his heart and refused to free the Israelites.
- The last judgment which was the number tenth plague was called “the LORD’s Passover” – Exo 12:11-12
- In this judgment, all the first born in every Egyptian family in the land of Egypt both man and beast died because they were not protected from the destroyer.
- The Jewish families were told to sacrifice a lamb for each family and apply the blood of the slain lamb onto the upper top post and the two side posts of their door to save their first born from the judgment of God.
- Exo 12:13, “And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.”
- The Passover Lamb was a picture or a type of Christ
- This Passover event in Exodus was a picture of that which was to come in the New Testament.
There are FOUR Significant Similarities between the lamb sacrificed for each family in Exodus and the Lamb of God to be sacrificed at Calvary Cross
- The Passover Lamb must be Perfect – Exo. 12:5, “Your lamb shall be without blemish (spotless, without any outward sign of imperfection, also refers to being innocent)” – The Lord Jesus Christ is Perfect and Sinless.
a) Judas Iscariot confessed, “I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood” – Mat 27:4 – Judas was one of the twelve disciples of Christ and he knew Christ from close range yet he said I have betrayed innocent blood. Due to his stricken and troubled conscience, Judas went and hung himself.
b) Pilate the presiding judge decided not to have any part with the false accusations of those who demanded the death of Christ, said, “I am innocent of this just man see ye to it” - Mat 27:24 – under cross examination – Christ was declared to be a just man – righteous and innocent – John 19:3 – Pilate said “I find no fault in him”
c) Christ, the Lamb of God is Perfect and Sinless – 2 Cor 5:21, “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”
d) All of us have sinned against God – Rom 3:23 No one from Adam’s race is fit to be the Sacrificial Lamb because we are with blemish, God has to send His only Begotten Son to be the sacrificial Lamb
The Passover Lamb must be Slain According to God’s Timing
