A God Fearing Family
by Pastor John Khng
Scripture Reading:
Introduction: How many of us here have children who are serving the Lord together with us in some church ministries? If your family is serving the Lord together, I want to praise the Lord for you. All of us need to think about having a family who will work together and serve the Lord together as you hear the message today of Noah’s family in the Book of Genesis.
I. God Warned Noah – “being warned of God” - Heb. 11:7; Gen. 6:13
Gen 6:13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
A. Of His Anger against Wickedness, Evil Imaginations, Corruptions and Violence Gen. 6:5,11-13
1. Paul wrote of the depraved condition of his day – Rom. 3:10-18; 23.
Rom 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
Rom 3:11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
Rom 3:12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
Rom 3:13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:
Rom 3:14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:
Rom 3:15 Their feet are swift to shed blood:
Rom 3:16 Destruction and misery are in their ways:
Rom 3:17 And the way of peace have they not known:
Rom 3:18 There is no fear of God before their eyes
Rom 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
2. We are living in the last days before the second coming of Christ – 2 Tim. 3:1-5
2Ti 3:1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
2Ti 3:2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
2Ti 3:3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
2Ti 3:4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
2Ti 3:5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
3. Today’s condition is the same as in Noah’s time - Luke 17:26-27.
Luk 17:26 And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.
Luk 17:27 They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.
4. Do you notice all the sins mention in the passages we have read being shown on the television, air in the radio, and making headline news in the newspaper - All have sinned says the Bible.
5. We must not just look at the world’s condition but also our own sinful condition.
6. Why is it that we are not shocked by all these sinful things before, or why we are not appalled by them when we see them inside our own home? The answer will startle you. It is because these evil things are now considered normal because we have slowly grown used to it over a long period of time.
B. Of His Intention to Destroy All the Sinful Inhabitants of the earth by a Flood – 6:17
Gen 6:17 And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.
C. God will judge sinful men in the future by fire – 2 Pet. 3:3-7.
2Pe 3:3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
2Pe 3:4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
2Pe 3:5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
2Pe 3:6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:
2Pe 3:7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
II. Noah was Moved with Fear – “moved with fear” - Heb. 11:7
A. God told Noah to build an ark – Gen. 6:14-17
Gen 6:14 Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.
Gen 6:15 And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits.
Gen 6:16 A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.
Gen 6:17 And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.
B. Noah built the ark according to God’s instructions – Gen. 6:22; Heb. 11:7
Gen 6:22 Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.
See Gen. 6:15 – one cubit is 18 inches long – L = 450 feet; W = 75 feet ; H= 45 feet
This story is so familiar that we may miss the importance of what God was asking of Noah. Noah was asked to build a vessel that was 4 1/2 stories high and as long as a football field and a half - even though he lived over 500 miles from any water or sea!
C. God told Noah of things not seen as yet – “of things not seen as yet” - Heb. 11:7 – According to some scholars, it had never rained before upon the earth at that time. So, here we have people who are totally unfamiliar with water coming from the sky, or floods, and Noah is building a big ship to float away in. Can you imagine how Noah explained that one to people? No one had seen a flood before during the time of Noah. No one could imagine that there will be an universal flood. Today we read about the universal flood and we have seen the evidences that it took place in Noah’s time. Now we are warned by God of a future fire judgment which is not seen as yet. It is coming and if we see fire raining down from heaven, it will be too late.
D. Noah was moved with fear – because he knew whatever God said must be true. Are we move with fear or are we like those described in Rom. 3:18, “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
III. Noah’s Whole Family was Saved by the Ark – “to the saving of his house” - Heb. 11:7
A. God told Noah and his family to go into the ark. God also caused the animals to go into the ark by seven (clean animals and birds) and by two (unclean animals) – Gen 7:1-12
B. The whole family of Noah was saved – “to the saving of his house” – Heb. 11:7’ Gen. 7:13
Gen 7:13 In the selfsame day entered Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah's wife, and the three wives of his sons with them, into the ark;
C. Eight is a significant number to the Chinese. It is also significant to prove that the Bible is the Word of God – The Chinese word for boat is made up of three component radicals. The Chinese character for a boat combines vessel with person and the number Eight. There were Eight persons in Noah's ark according to Gen. 7:13
D. God shut them in and at the same time shut the sinners out - Gen. 7:16-24
E. The Lord Jesus Christ is our “Ark of Salvation Today” – “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” - Acts 4:12
Conclusion: Noah was a good and godly father – He was accepted by God. He was just, perfect, and he walked with God. Read Gen 6:8,9:
Gen 6:8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.
Gen 6:9 These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.
He was obedient to God – Gen. 6:22; 7:5.
Gen 6:22 Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.
Gen 7:5 And Noah did according unto all that the LORD commanded him.
He was able to get his wife, 3 sons and 3 daughters in law to help him build the ark – Gen. 7:7
Gen 7:7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
Noah built the ark and I believe he had help from his family members. We may be having a hard time to get our children to help with house work like sweeping the floor, mopping the floor, washing cups and plates, etc. but we still need to get them involved with house work and then one step further to get them to be involved with God’s work.
Today we need to encourage our young children, our teenagers, youths, adults, married sons and married daughters, daughters in law or sons in law to serve together with us in the work of the Gospel Ministry.
Noah was able to build a godly family. The whole family built the ark of salvation. We have here an example of A God Fearing Family. They Believed in God Together, Obeyed God Together and Served God Together.
Scripture Reading:
- Hebrews 11:7 “By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.”
- Genesis 6:5-22; 7:1-13
