Messages on Prayer
Biblical Teachings on Prayers
by Pastor John Khng
1) We must pray SPECIFICALLY for things we need.
"Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?" - Matt. 7:7-10
2) We must pray in FAITH.
"Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them." - Mark 11:24
"But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed." - James 1:6
3) We must pray with PERSEVERANCE.
And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;
And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth? - Luke 18:1,7,8.
4) We must pray in ACCORDANCE TO GOD'S WILL.
"And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him." - 1 John 5:14,15.
5) We must pray in SUBMISSION TO GOD'S WILL.
"Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." - Prov. 3:5,6
"And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me:nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt." - Matthew 26:39
6) We must pray IN THE HOLY SPIRIT.
"Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit himself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God." - Rom. 8:26,27.
7) We must pray IN JESUS NAME.
"And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it." - John 14:13,14.
Our Lord's Prayer
"After this manner therefore pray ye:
Our Father which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power,
and the glory,
for ever.
Amen.
- Matt. 6:9-13
"Prayer is not overcoming God's reluctance, it is laying hold of His highest willingness." - Trench
