Definition of Christian / Biblical Fundamentalism

WHAT IS CHRISTIAN / BIBLICAL FUNDAMENTALISM?

Definition 1: A Christian Fundamentalist is One who Contends Earnestly for the Faith by Speaking out, Separating from and Guarding against False Teachers from bringing in False Teachings into the Church. – John Khng

“When you hear the word FUNDAMENTALIST, what do you think of?  It probably conjures up in your mind images of uneducated, radical religious people.  Maybe the term fundamentalist is a word that denotes to you an offensive person who is mean spirited, obnoxious, somewhat ignorant and fanatical.  I want to define what a Biblical Fundamentalist is.  It is my conviction that Biblical Fundamentalism is historic Christianity.  They are one and the same.  I want to share with you what historic Bible believers have always held.

What is a definition of historic fundamentalism, or Biblical Christianity? I submit this for you to ponder:

Definition 2: Biblical Fundamentalism is a movement that believes, obeys, proclaims, and contends for the vital doctrines of inerrant Scripture and separates from those who deny those clear truths.

Kirsop Lake, a theological liberal said this, "It is a mistake, often made by educated persons who happen to have but little knowledge of historical theology, to suppose that Fundamentalism is a new and strange form of thought.  It is nothing of the kind: it is the survival of a theology which was once universally held by all Christians.  The Fundamentalist may be wrong: I think that he is.  But it is we who have departed from the tradition, not he, and I am sorry for the fate of anyone who tries to argue with a Fundamentalist on the basis of authority.  The Bible and the corpus theologicum of the Church is on the Fundamentalist side."” - C. Matthew Recker, Pastor, Heritage Baptist Church, New York City, USA

Definition 3: Fundamentalism as defined by the World Congress of Fundamentalists in 1976.
A FUNDAMENTALIST IS A BORN-AGAIN BELIEVER IN THE LORD JESUS CHRIST WHO:
  1. Maintains an immovable allegiance to the inerrant, infallible, and verbally inspired Bible;
  2. Believes that whatever the Bible says is so;
  3. Judges all things by the Bible and is judged only by the Bible;
  4. Affirms the foundational truths of the historic Christian Faith:
    • The doctrine of the Trinity,
    • The incarnation, virgin birth, substitutionary atonement, bodily resurrection and glorious ascension, and Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ,
    • The new birth through regeneration by the Holy Spirit,
    • The resurrection of the saints to life eternal,
    • The resurrection of the ungodly to final judgment and eternal death,
    • The fellowship of the saints, who are the body of Christ;
  5. Practices fidelity to that Faith and endeavors to preach it to every creature;
  6. Exposes and separates from all ecclesiastical denial of that Faith, compromise with error, and apostasy from the Truth; and
  7. Earnestly contends for the Faith once delivered.

Definition 4 - “Ideally, a Christian Fundamentalist is one who desires to reach out in love and compassion to people, believes and defends the whole Bible as the absolute , inerrant, and authoritative Word of God, and stands committed to the doctrine amd practice of holiness.” – David O Bealle, “In Pursuit of Purity,” p. 3

Definition 5 - “Historic Fundamentalism is the literal exposition of all the affirmations and attitudes of the Bible and the militant exposure of all non-Biblical affirmations and attitudes.” – George W. Dollar, “A History of Fundamentalism in America”
