What the Bible Says About Hell
by Pastor John Khng
Scripture Reading: Lk 16:19-31
The Rich Man and Lazarus
Luk 16:19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:
Luk 16:20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,
Luk 16:21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.
Luk 16:22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
Luk 16:23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
Luk 16:24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
Luk 16:25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.
Luk 16:26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
Luk 16:27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house:
Luk 16:28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
Luk 16:29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.
Luk 16:30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.
Luk 16:31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
Introduction:
Hell is often thought of as a place of great sufferings so it is not a very pleasant subject for preaching. We would rather not talk about it and wish that hell does not exist. That is not the case. God’s Word, the Bible tells us about the existence of hell. Today I am going to preach on “What the Bible Says about Hell.”

E. What is Hell like? – Luke 16:19-31
There are so many views and opinions about hell. Who is right and who is wrong? The best way is to let the Bible speaks on the subject.
1) Hell is a Place of Real Torments
A. The Rich Man and Lazarus - Luke 16:19-31 - Is this a parable or a real story? Could be either one. A parable is a story that seeks to teach some truths. We can compare the truths in the story with other teachings of the Bible and it will show us that Christ drew opened the curtains of hell to show us what hell is like.
“a short allegorical story designed to illustrate or teach some truth, religious principle, or moral lesson.” – dictionary.com
B. In the story – the word “torment” appeared 3x – vv. 23, 24, 28 - the rich man called hell a place of torment
C. The rich man was tormented by fire – v. 24 The fire is real fire because he thirsted and asked for a drop of water to cool his tongue in v. 24. He was conscious of his sufferings.
i) Luk 16:24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
ii) Mat 13:41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity;
Mat 13:42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
iii) Mat 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
iv) Rev 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
Rev 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
v) Hell is a real place and it is a place of real torments by fire.
2. Hell is a Place of Terrible Torments
A. There will be Terrible suffering in hell – the rich man begging in hell (vs. Lazarus begging on earth) for a drop of water and for Lazarus to be sent to warn his 5 brothers about hell – Luke 16:24, 28,
“And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. “
“For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.”
B. There will be separation – Luk 16:26 – No way of going over from hell to heaven and heaven to hell.
“And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.” – Luk 16:26
C. There will be “wailing and gnashing of teeth” - Mat 13:42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. See also Mat 13:50
D. There will be darkness – Mat. 22:13 – suffering together in hell but yet suffer alone in darkness
“Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” – Mat 22:13
3. Hell is a Place of Eternal Torments
A. Everlasting Fire – Mat. 18:8; 25:41
“Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:” - Mat 25:41 - Hell was prepared for Satan and his demons, men joined them because we refused to repent from our sins and we chose to follow Satan.
B. Everlasting Punishment – Mat 25:46
“And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.” – Mat 25:46
Heaven is a place where there is everlasting life and Hell is a place where there is everlasting death.
C. Eternal Damnation – Mar 3:29
“But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:” – Mar 3:29
II. Fallen people go to hell because of their Rejection of Christ – Rev. 20:15
Rev 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. – Those not found in the Book of life are those who have rejected Christ.
III. God loves mankind and wants every one of us to go to heaven and not to hell - John 3:16; Acts 17:30-34; 2 Pet. 3:9; John 6:37; 2 Cor. 6:2
1) God loves us – “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” – John 3:16
2) God commands us to repent of our sins and to believe the gospel - Acts 17:30-34
Act 17:30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:
Act 17:31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.
Act 17:32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.
Act 17:33 So Paul departed from among them.
Act 17:34 Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
Three responses – Some mocked, some gave excuses – Acts 17:32; Some believe – Acts 17:34
3) God is waiting for us to repent and be saved = 2 Peter 3:9
“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” – 2 Pet 3:9
4) God will not reject us if we come to Him right now for salvation – John 6:37
Joh 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
Conclusion:
A. Avoid going to hell at all cost even it means losing a hand or a leg or an eye – Jesus said:
Mar 9:43 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:
Mar 9:44 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
Mar 9:45 And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:
Mar 9:46 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
Mar 9:47 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:
Mar 9:48 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
Read also Mat. 5: 29-30; 18:8-9 (Mar 9:43-48) – Twice repeated in two different occasions.
B. Only One Way to escape Hell – Repent of our sins and Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as our Personal Saviour – Mark 1:15; John 14:6; Acts 4:12; 1 Tim. 2:5

“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” – Acts 4:12
C. The time to accept Christ is Now – 2 Cor. 6:2
“behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation” – 2 Cor. 6:2
Think It Over
"How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;" - Hebrews 2:3
