Life is a Psalm (Song, Hymn) of Praise

by Pastor John Khng
Scripture Reading: Psalm 100: 1-5
(A Psalm is a sacred song or hymn)
Psalm 100 - A Psalm of praise.
Psa.100:1  Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.
Psa 100:2  Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.
Psa 100:3  Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
Psa 100:4  Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
Psa 100:5  For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

Introduction:
Chinese New Year is a time to wish each other happiness – Is this the only time in the year where we feel happy or shouldn’t we be happy all the time, every day of our life?

One of the Devil’s lies is “When you become a Christian, you can no longer be happy” because you have to give up the things you like to do and do the things you do not like to do.

You cannot be happy without God but Satan wants us to be happy without God.  Christians are happy because he has God.  Christian living is characterized by Singing, Serving & Thanksgiving

I. Singing to the LORD with Joy – Ps. 100:1
II. Serving the LORD with Gladness – Ps. 100:2-3
III. Giving Thanks to the LORD with Praise – Ps. 100:4-5

I. Singing to the LORD with Joy – Ps. 100:1
  • A. A Call to Praise or Worship
  • B. Make a Joyful Noise (Shout)
  • C. “All ye lands” – Referring to all the people in the lands – Make disciples of all people of all nations – the Great Commission in Mt 28:18-20.
  • D.  ILL - A conference at a Presbyterian church in Omaha
“A conference at a Presbyterian church in Omaha. People were given helium filled balloons and told to release them at some point in the service when they felt like expressing the joy in their hearts. Since they were Presbyterians, they weren't free to say "Hallelujah, Praise the Lord." All through the service balloons ascended, but when it was over 1/3 of the balloons were unreleased. Let your balloon go.” - Bruce Larson, Luke, p. 43.
  • E) Hymn: “We’re Marching to Zion” by Isaac Watts
    Stanza 2 – Let those refuse to sing Who never knew our God;
But children of the Heavenly King; But children of the Heavenly King
May speak their joys abroad; May speak their joys abroad

II. Serving the LORD with Gladness – Ps. 100:2-3
  • A. Singing, Serving, Singing; Worship, Service, Worship
  • B. Serving with gladness - Service with a Smile - not serving to get gladness – not serving to make me feel good. Problem with serving to get a good feeling, once the good feeling is gone, the service also stops.
  • C. ILL - John Wesley learned from a porter
John Wesley was about 21 years of age when he went to Oxford University. He came from a Christian home, and he was gifted with a keen mind and good looks. Yet in those days he was a bit snobbish and sarcastic. One night, however, something happened that set in motion a change in Wesley's heart. While speaking with a porter, he discovered that the poor fellow had only one coat and lived in such impoverished conditions that he didn't even have a bed. Yet he was an unusually happy person, filled with gratitude to God. Wesley, being immature, thoughtlessly joked about the man's misfortunes. "And what else do you thank God for?" he said with a touch of sarcasm. The porter smiled, and in the spirit of meekness replied with joy, "I thank Him that He has given me my life and being, a heart to love Him, and above all a constant desire to serve Him!" Deeply moved, Wesley recognized that this man knew the meaning of true thankfulness.
Many years later, in 1791, John Wesley lay on his deathbed at the age of 88. Those who gathered around him realized how well he had learned the lesson of praising God in every circumstance. Despite Wesley's extreme weakness, he began singing the hymn, "I'll Praise My Maker While I've Breath." Our Daily Bread.

III. Giving Thanks to the LORD with Praise – Ps. 100:4-5
  • A. 1Th 5:18  in every thing give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus in regard to you.
  • B. Psa 100:4  Enter ye His gates with thanksgiving, His courts with praise, Give ye thanks to Him, bless ye His Name.
  • C. Thanksgiving with Praise – Higher exhortation – from thanking to praising - Thank God for the food, Praise God for the food. – Thank and praise God for the food – remember tonight most of us are having the Chinese New Year reunion dinner
  • D) Message: “Commanded To Praise” by Don Baggett, Trinity Baptist Church
    Four Benefits of Praise
  1. PRAISE TURNS YOUR FOCUS (from self to God)
  2. PRAISE BUILDS YOUR FAITH
  3. PRAISE DEFEATS THE DEVIL
  4. PRAISE HONORS GOD

Reasons for the Three Exhortations To Sing, To Serve and To Give Thanks – Ps. 100:3 & 5
How can we live a life of Singing, Serving and Thanksgiving?
We can because:
  1. The LORD is God,
  2. He is Our Sovereign Creator and we are His People,
  3. He is Our Loving Shepherd and we are His Sheep – Ps. 100:3
How can we live a life of Joy, Gladness and Praise?
We can because:
  1. The LORD is Good,
  2. His Mercy is Everlasting and
  3. His Truth (Faithfulness) endures to ALL generations – Ps 100:5
The Power of Praise
  1. Example: King Jehoshaphat and the People of Judah
2Ch 20:21  And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever.
2Ch 20:22  And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.
  2. Example: Paul and Silas
Act 16:25  And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.
Act 16:26  And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed.
  3. Example: The citizens of Feldkirch, Austria and the invasion of Napoleon
The citizens of Feldkirch, Austria, didn't know what to do. Napoleon's massive army was preparing to attack. Soldiers had been spotted on the heights above the little town, which was situated on the Austrian border. A council of citizens was hastily summoned to decide whether they should try to defend themselves or display the white flag of surrender. It happened to be Easter Sunday, and the people had gathered in the local church.
The pastor rose and said, "Friends, we have been counting on our own strength, and apparently that has failed. As this is the day of our Lord's resurrection, let us just ring the bells, have our services as usual, and leave the matter in His hands. We know only our weakness, and not the power of God to defend us."
The council accepted his plan and the church bells rang. The enemy, hearing the sudden peal, concluded that the Austrian army had arrived during the night to defend the town. Before the service ended, the enemy broke camp and left.                                             Source Unknown.
